So, the other day, I had to deal with another call from my very persistent local army recruiter. I can say persistent because this would be the third time they've called since I turned 18. And I guess out of loneliness, I always feel like actually talking to the recruiter and feigning interest. Or maybe it is real interest... (I would love to be Rambo) Here's how most conversations go:

Recruiter: Hi, I'm (Sgt./Cpl./Lt./other random armed forces prefix-circle one) (Hispanic sounding name).
Me: Hi...
R: (casually) So what have you been up to?
Me: (hesitant, who does this guy think he is?) Nothing much... (stupid answer, I'm falling for his friendly demeanor. Quick, come up with something that shows you have a future) Just getting ready for college.
R: Oh really, you know if you have trouble paying for college there's all sorts of help you can get from the army and all sorts of programs for you. Where are you planning on going?

This is where the tone usually changes from his aggressive friendly recruiting to a conclusive goodbye and a "call me if your plans change"

Me: UCSD. (probably anything besides city college would trigger his change of tone.)

But this most recent call, he must have been desperate.

R: Hi, I'm (Sgt./Cpl./Lt./other random armed forces prefix-circle one) (Hispanic sounding name).
M: Hi.
R: Bla bla bla army?
M: uh, not really.
R: Why not?
M: (thinking, how can I get rid of this guy...) I dunno. (brilliant response I know... that definitely won't work)
R: Well you know there's all sorts of good opportunities.
M: Yeah... I know.
R: How about this, I'll see if you qualify for the army.
M: Sure.

At this point, he asks me about 10 personal questions, including inquiries about my height and weight and age and high school and extracurriculars.

R: Well, you're qualified. (I feel so flattered at this point.../sarcasm)
M: Cool
R: So, How about you make an appointment and come in and talk to me in person?
M: Yeah... I don't think so.
R: Well, why not?
M: Well, I am going to college this fall.
R: Ok, but you're not busy now, right? Come in on Tuesday.
M: (think quick, man) Um, yeah, no can do... I have to do something... I have an appointment.
R: Ok, well when aren't you busy.
M: (crap, he's got me, I can't make an excuse for every day next week... or can I?) Well, I don't want to join the army... (ok... straightforward might work.)
R: What?!! why not?
M: Well, I'm going to college. (redundant, but it's all I got)
R: What are you going to do in college?
M: Engineering.
R: Well the army has all sorts of engineering programs.
M: Yeah, but... I'm going to college....

We talk (well, he argues for joining the army while I respond with comments like: "I don't know" or "I don't think so.") for about 5 minutes more while I try to come up with a quick response to get him to back off, but alas, my brain fails me. But I guess I wore him down with my negative responses and he must have been a bit annoyed.

R: Well, you know, a lot of kids go off to college and drop out in their first or second year. So I'll be in touch and I'll call you back in a few months to see how you're doing with your goals. (as in, I hope you cannot achieve your goals) You know what, here's my number to call me.
M: Ok let me get my pen. (I wait about 15 seconds) Ok.
R: _________<-- phone number that I don't know because I didn't write it down...

The end. Moral of the story: my local army recruiter thinks that I'm going to fail in the future, but apparently I'm qualified to be "army strong". Being in the army is all that I can be... (I can't blame him though, I sounded like his usual army prospects with my responses, but you can't blame me though, he did wake me up...)

P.S. : I'm not dissing the Army or anyone in the army, that stuff is tough. I just think I would be better suited to classroom learning rather than battlefield fighting.

Can I survive on a 2000 calorie diet? Can a 200+ pound*, muscular, previously active, now lethargic, hopefully soon to be active again man survive on 2000 calories... (is that a run-on?) Yeah, easily. (If we're talking 2000 calories per meal, then yeah...) 2000 calories/day? Now that is questionable. But, of course I'm going to try. And this is while following the plan to a hundred pushups and running 20 minutes daily. So it looks like I'm going to be filling myself with gallons of water and a ton of gum. (I'm sure if gum takes seven years to digest it's a great tool to utilize for anyone trying to curb their hunger.)

The more thought I put to it, the more unlikely it seems, so for now, goodnight. I'll check back in tomorrow with my results from day 1.

Started with an initial testing of 24, so I guess that means 24% of the way there. I'm on day 2 of week 2, and I suggest you get started. According to the NY Times, the pushup is AMAZING. Just set aside 5-10 minutes and get to work.

Here's a pretty cool site for tracking calories. And it's free. It has pretty much every food out there, although I did have to make my own entry for my favorite It's-It's on top of oreo cheesecakes.

And finally there's Traineo. Probably the best tool with one of the coolest features. You can set up motivators (friends or family, but enemies would probably be better motivation) to receive emails on your progress to healthiness. Sign me up as your motivator, I'd love to yell at (motivate) your fat slobby selves.

In case anyones actually reading this, and isnt used to not seeing a post for weeks at a time, here's a list of movies to check out when you're bored...

My personal picks:

Action

The Warriors - classic, and oddly funny

Battle Royale - Gotta use subtitles with this one, but it's worth it. Crazy setting and plot, like many other movies on this list

District B13 - Another movie that you'll need subtitles with, unless you speak French... This film highlights the art of Parkour with all sorts of crazy chase scenes.

Leon : The Professional - A hitman takes a young Natalie Portman under his wings, reluctantly. A creepy/awkward relationship begins

Wasabi - Practically the same story as Leon, but this time, the main character has to take care of a 19 year old Japanese girl. Won't make you feel as dirty as The Professional will.

The Boondock Saints - Awesome vigilante movie, just check it out already.

Drama

The Mist - Wow, this movie really stirred up emotions. Just watch it and you'll see. Pretty much all the emotions are there: Fear, anger, despair. All but the good emotions.

12 Angry Men - The only black and white movie that I really enjoyed. And the only movie on this list that has almost no action of the violent variety at all. Bravo.

Comedy (stand-up: check em out on youtube if you can't find 'em anywhere else)

Mitch Hedberg - Awesome 1-liners with a very unique presentation

The Amazing Jonathan - Awesome magical comedy

Flight of the Conchords - Awesome musical comedy

Russell Peters - Awesome stereotypical/almost racist comedy

It feels pretty good to be free. No lie. But I haven't done any sort of math in weeks... So here we go:

My phoning stats on my Samsung alias:

Total calls: 822

Total airtime: 814 minutes

Average call length: 59.4 seconds

63% of calls were received with the average length of 70 seconds

37% of calls were dialed with the average length of 41 seconds

74% of airtime was spent on calls received

26% of airtime was spent on calls dialed

So I guess what this means is, I don't call very often... and when I do, it's all business. I'm pretty sure no one can beat my short average call length, dollar to anyone who can with proof. So do your own math and see if you're needy (high percentage of calls were dialed) or if you're needed (other way... obviously)

So I was wondering what to do with the rest of my life at dinner today. We were at a seafood restaurant, and suddenly my gaze came upon a beautiful piece of art (yeah, it literally came upon it... up on it and all over it. nasty). It must have cost a fortune:

Very fitting for a seafood restaurant. So anyways, I thought that being an artist would be cool. Selling pieces of crap like those fish would make me feel like a con-man though. A four year old could paint that... The artist was even bold enough to sign his name: Maqseman. Never heard of him and now I know why.

So high school is practically over, and I'm enjoying this freedom. There's this freedom to do anything... like blogging whenever I want. (as if school was holding me back before, hah, I'm such a joker)

Anyways, marathon training is officially in week 2 of 16. So for those of you who have actually figured out my weight... let's just say, all those calculations you did were for nothing. That number is pointless. Well, maybe not pointless, it's still kind of close... but that's besides the point. So does anyone want to run the lake on Saturday? or next Saturday? or any Saturday?

Well, I hopped on the scale today, and I was pretty surprised. What did the scale say? Nothing. But my weight in mathematical terms: y'(20) when y(x) = (1/5) x^3

Too much AP Calculus on the mind... (Actually, I did it more out of embarrassment than actual nerd-ness) But anyways, I decided it was time to get back to good enough shape to prepare for marathon training. (August 3rd) So here was today's workout:

So I finished about 1/2 of the workout with about 80% of their recommended weight... and it sucked (in a good way). I might not be walking tomorrow. Boy, those Navy SEALs are intense.

Pretty radical statement in the title, eh? Well... that's because it's true, for the most part.

State your evidence, you say? That's good, that's what you should demand. That's exactly what I thought when I first saw Penn & Teller's Bullshit episode on recycling. Just as they do on all of their Bullshit episodes, they gave good evidence of their argument and showed the stupidity of people who disagree with their point of view, in a very humorous way. They also conduct semi-scientific experiments to show the how the average citizen falls for some real bullshit:

Although I already knew many of these things were bullshit before watching their show, the way they present their arguments just makes me more of a believer (in the bullshit-ness) I highly recommend watching their show however you can get your hands on it, particularly the episodes on Feng Shui, Gun Control, and Profanity.

So naturally, being such a fan of rap and hip-hop, I was bound to run into this song:

and at first, I thought, alright cool... but then I realized something... listen to this one at about 47 seconds in...

Hmmm... what are the odds that there would be two songs about flashlights? or flashing lights for that matter. The odds are too slim to be a coincidence... (seriously, I haven't actually figured out what Kanye's talking about (something about police lights?) or what Röyksopp is talking about (I think they're actually talking about real flashlights...) but it just seems like more than a coincidence)

I know huh... brilliant detective work. Don't get offended, I know Kanye didn't copy this song and it was a collaboration or whatever. I just find it quite... irksome (look it up) when people hear some song that "samples" another and don't realize that their genius artist sampled another song. Or what's worse is when they think the original is the copycat...argh.

Here's another offender:

Omg... that's where... from the 80's! (and these guys are actually singing the lyrics to a song from the 60's!)

And this could quite possibly be the most annoying case:

Whoa whoa whoa... I know what you're thinking: "Who are these white guys mimicking the Federation? That's not even that clever... they just changed stunna glasses to sunglasses... although I'll give them some credit for building that time machine to send them back in time to make this in the 80's... Nice move Corey Hart..."

It's not so much the fact that most songs nowadays sample other songs, it's just the fact that people totally diss the classics. What kills me is when people ask: "Wow, is this a remix?" to the original song...

However, I'm pretty sure these are all legitimate samples. Except the first example... those are probably not related at all. It was just a complete coincidence that I was listening to Röyksopp on the first day that I heard that Kanye song and I thought they were similar, but they weren't really.

Oh, and here's a classic case of sampling gone bad:

This just shows how messed up our educational system is. But I have to say, the fact that he was able to cheat his way to a bachelor's degree is quite impressive, and shows some real American ingenuity.

Wow stuff keeps popping up onto this post. So last night I just watched one of the most underrated movies ever. It was surprisingly good. What was the movie?

"They have the looks... that kill." Maybe... but overall the movie was surprisingly PG. No actual killing, no blood, and... no nudity. Just a lot of swimsuits and "fighting". (By "fighting", I mean girls in very little clothes throwing each other around) Go check it out.

3. This may be the most fun and rewarding... or the most depressing: run a marathon. Not just complete any marathon in any crappy time, but the SF Marathon in under 4 hours. So I ask, anyone want to train with me? Please?

(BTW, I make sure to photograph my hand in every picture, just so you know I took time out of my day to actually take a picture and transfer it to my computer... So you better appreciate all of them)

Oh and...

4. Complete my better version of Cloverfield... actually shot on a cameraphone. Filming has been completed, although editing cannot begin. The problem is my phone saves movies in some sort of 3GPP2 movie format, which actually does not exist. So I'm stuck. But as soon as I can figure it out, you'll see a real horribly shot movie. (This is the actual camera used to film Cloverfield. On the other hand, this is the actual camera used to shoot my masterpiece.)

So, as you can see, I don't have a very high opinion of Cloverfield... it was very disappointing. I think I could have made a better movie on my camera phone. I know they were going for a unique perspective and all, but quite frankly it was too much. My opinion: maybe worth the $7 I paid for matinee, but not quite worth the $10 regular price...

Really now... how much longer will we be subjected to ads that are completely irrelevant? The worst part is that these ads are usually very effective and alluring. So, where is the nearest Sonic?

Yeah... a whole 55 freakin' miles away... although it might be worth it to drive over there for some 1/2 price drinks during happy hour... I've never even been there yet I know their specials, what a waste of advertising. (How do you like that high quality home-made graphic?)

Anyways, I have to keep my mind off of Sonic right now, it just pisses me off, so here's a video for today. If you know anything about the internet, you might find this funny.

This is great... these guys are video blogging live about their 4 Zelda game marathon, and not just any old Zelda games, but Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess in 2 days. Pretty damn awesome... To be honest, I have yet to completely finish a single Zelda game. So check it out

Yeah... sorry about that, but I've been really busy, sleeping... and eating... and not blogging. But the way I saw it, no one really cared, but now I've seen the light. A surprising number of people actually depend on me for daily content, and I apologize to all 6 of you for not delivering.

Here's a really cool link with all the "great" upcoming movies of 2008. See, I put great in quotes because, thats a really big list with a lot of duds, IMO. So I sorted through the upcoming titles and found what I thought were the best, and I even found trailers for each.

#1: Get Smart. This looks awesome, lot of big name actors like Steve Carrell and The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson.

Release Date: June 20

#2: Cloverfield. I couldn't not put this on my list because, well, there's a ton of hype.. and a ton of intrigue. They've done a good job hiding the monster and much of the plot. All we do know is that something is attacking New York City... that's really all.

Release Date: Everyone should know this by now: January 18 (1-18-08)

#3: Rambo (IV or To hell and back). Again... the hype's gotten ahold of me. Judging from the on set pictures that I've seen, this movie might be a bit disturbing, and no, not because it's going to be pretty violent, but because Stallone has become a pretty nasty flabby old man. But I'm pretty sure the computers will take care of that.

Release Date: January 25

#4: Semi-Pro. Jackie Moon is to basketball as Ron Burgundy is to... anchoring.

Release Date: February 29

#5: Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Directed by Kevin Smith who had a lot to do with Clerks II, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (he was silent bob), and Dogma. So if you liked those this should be pretty good. This would either rank higher or lower if there was a trailer out... but right now, I'm just judging on plot: "Lifelong platonic friends Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) look to solve their respective cashflow problems by making an adult film together. As the cameras roll, however, the duo begin to sense that they may have more feelings for each other than they previously thought." That actually doesn't sound too hilarious, but there's bound to be some nudity... right? So... still good. (I'm just kidding around, ladies... I'm not that desperate for the action, unless you want me to be (I don't actually know how that's supposed to be funny, it might not be (But I do enjoy these nesting ideas within nesting parentheses)))
Release Date: Sometime in 2008

#12: Scanners. Yes, a remake of a classic... Well, maybe not a classic, personally I haven't watched it, but I have heard about it. Mostly all I've heard about is the infamous scene that goes a little something like this: (CLICK THE IMAGE)

So, this Brazilian ice cream company has decided to put iPod shuffles in their ice cream packages, just like those Pepsi look under the cap things, except these... Brazilians get their prizes right away, so actually not like those. Pretty cool.
